Yaa E. A. Oppong

I am a interdisciplinary artist based between London and Newcastle Upon Tyne, working with song, spatial audio and ceramics. I completed a PhD in computational biology in 2020.

My practice explores how biological knowledge production constructs notions of ‘other’ (species, race, nature etc), that serve to enable violent extraction.

I translate genomic data into sound as an act of epistemic refusal, creating installations where sound becomes a way of knowing that refuses to fit within biological discourse.

My work invites improvisation and conversation, a way of being in solidarity with and connecting to data subjects.

This was the genesis of the Tea Service event series, an evening of herbal tea plant DNA sonification and jazz improvisation.

In 2025, I was awarded DYCP funding from Arts Council England to undertake a residency in spatial audio at MONOM Berlin where I was able to build on this work.
